How to Market as a Highly Sensitive Person
Check-in with yourself. One way I like to regain ground is by spending time outside. Being outside makes me feel more connected with my purpose. What do you do to feel grounded?
If you get overwhelmed by noises, lights, and other sensory experiences, or if you internalize other people’s feelings easily, you might be a highly sensitive person. Highly sensitive people make up approximately 15 percent of the population. Understanding your strengths and weaknesses as a highly sensitive person will allow you to market yourself more effectively without burning out.
If you’re a highly sensitive person, you’re committed to your work and emotionally tied to it. You care what other people think and value their opinion. You also have strong emotional awareness and empathy for others. Because of this, you offer your projects passionate and innovative thinking, good leadership through valuing others, and a dedication to fairness and justice. You also pick up on things that other people might miss.
These are amazing traits, and make you a fantastic entrepreneur. However, as a highly sensitive person, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and burned out. My goal is to give you the skills you need to market yourself well, and know that it's okay to take a break when you need to.
5 Skills for Marketing as a Highly Sensitive Person
One! Think about what you love and start slow.
Don’t think that marketing has to be an all-or-nothing approach. There are a million ways to market yourself: facebook ads, building an online community, tiktok videos, email marketing, instagram posts and reels, twitter, and so many more. Spend some time checking in with yourself and figuring out what systems you want to use. Think about a sustainable way for you to approach marketing. Utilize tools that allow you to batch posts, so you can set it and forget it. Or, if that’s too overwhelming, set aside time in your schedule every day to make a post or two. It doesn’t matter what approach you make - as long as it’s sustainable to who you are.
Two! Prioritize yourself and focus on finding a balance that feels appropriate to you.
As a highly sensitive person, it’s easy to care so much about another person (or what they think of your work) that you get overwhelmed. If you feel this way, it’s okay. Just take a step back and look at the bigger picture. The goal of marketing is to strategically spread the word about your products and services. If this is overwhelming you, review your priorities and look at what strategies you’re using that aren’t serving you; replace them with strategies that work better for you.
Three! Learn to delegate tasks that don’t suit you
If you’re overwhelmed with a task, but you feel it’s crucial to your business, delegate it! Delegation is a huge skill that highly sensitive people need to tap into in order to save their energy for tasks that suit them. If you want to have an active instagram, but hate sitting down in Canva to create slides, that’s okay. There is no law that says entrepreneurs need to do everything by themselves. In fact, the opposite is true. The most effective way to run a business is to give away tasks that drain you, so you can focus on the tasks that invigorate you.
Four! Surround yourself with non-highly sensitive people
As a highly sensitive person, it’s important to have plenty of encouraging people in your corner. And even more than that, make sure that you have some people who aren’t highly sensitive. They will give you good feedback and balance. They will be able to listen to your overwhelm and give you perspective when you might be reading things emotively. It’s always good to have someone you can ask, “am I being sensitive, or is this actually an issue?” It allows you to be able to emotionally distance yourself from your marketing tactics and creates a supportive place for you to vent and check on the vibes you’re getting.
Five! Dedicate one recovery day a week.
It’s important to make sure you’re taking care of yourself to lessen the bouts of overwhelm. Take a day to check in with yourself and practice self-care. Take a long walk, recharge with a book. Spend time doing things you love and not working on the business. This brings twofold results. First, you’ll be able to go into the next week feeling like a million bucks, and second, because you’ve given your brain a break, you’ll be more innovative and creative.
